I try to get it reasonably level so the doors don't swing one way or the other. I leveled side to side and front to back till the doors stayed in place. Then I attached the bubble levels. The bubble levels sure make setup easy.

RE: Braking Help needed

I had a similar problem a couple years ago. I took it to an RV dealer. They removed all four wheels and found the wiring that goes to one of the brake magnets was rubbing against a moving part. It had worn through the wiring insulation so this was giving an intermittent problem for the brake controller. Sometimes the brakes worked and sometimes no brakes.

With that kind of load, I can't imagine why you would not run at max pressure.
For the people that are saying 65, I have to ask under what conditions would you run 80?
It is true that with high pressure and limited load, you will wear the tires in the middle of the tread but loaded is a different animal.

I have been told that pavement will tend to dry out tires. I know several people who park their RV tires on plywood to protect the tires. It seems like this could be one disadvantage or parking RV's on a limestone surface.

I have to assume you are mistaken about the load range "D" tires. The limiting factor on the rear axle is the tires.
Load range "E" are rated at 3042 pounds and you will notice the rating on the rear axle is 6084 (twice the rating on one load range "E" tire).
It is just not possible that you have load range "D" tires.

Ditto to all of the above responses. We love our Open Road, no problems, would buy another one in a minute.
We bought Open Road because it was the best value for the money (in 2004). Haven't looked at them in a couple years so don't know what has happened to the price since we bought.

Thanks for posting your neat idea. Wonderful way to save a bunch. I wanted to add the JT stabilizers but didn't want to spend the money. Now thanks to you I dont have to.
I'm thinking that stabilizing the "side to side" movement is more important than the "front to back" so it probably won't be necessary to stabilize in that direction.
How about the front legs? Are you planning to add stabilizers there? It seems that when I am in the back of the 5th wheel and my wife is walking around in the bedroom, that is when I get the most movement in the back of the trailer. So I think stabilizers might be very valuable on the front legs.

Doesn't sound like a poor connection to me. If it was a poor connection, you would have to bump up the voltage, not drop it down. I would have the brake shoes inspected. It is possible they are grabbing.
I had moderate mileage on my brakes and they appeared to be working just fine. No noticeable problems. But for my peace of mind, I took the rig in so the dealer could inspect the running gear. They found the brake lining was separating from the brake shoes.
I can't believe how lucky I was. I only took it in for peace of mind. They found a problem that could have turned into something major. As it was, they only had to replace the brake shoes and linings. The drums had not been damaged.

RE: trailer brake wear

We have had our 5th wheel for four years. I'm guessing we had 12000-14000 miles and everything including brakes were working fine. Just to be safe, I took the trailer to Lone Star RV in Houston, TX for a routine inspection.
That was one of the luckiest days of my life. All four brake pads were shot. Three were delaminating from the shoe. The fourth was broken.
Fortunately there was no damage to the drums. Like I said, the brakes were working fine and there was no indication of an impending problem.
From now on I take it in every two years.

Thanks for the information. Your explanations make sense and explain some of the things I observe.
This is now my fourth year camping with my 5th wheel and my sensors are more or less working correctly. With the tanks empty, I generally have two top lights out and sometimes three top lights out. Of course the top light is the most important.
The sensors also tell me how well I have flushed the black tank. If I simply drain the black tank, all four lights will might remain on. However, if I flush it real good (run several bowls of water through), then for sure the top two lights will be out and maybe three lights will be out.

How Tank Sensor Works

Does anyone know how the tank sensors and control panel work. I have been assuming that each tank had four electric probes positioned at regular levels and each light was connected to a probe.
However, I unsnapped the control panel so I could see the wires connected to it. It appears that each tank has only ONE wire coming up to the control panel.
So that blows my theory. So does anyone know how one wire will control four lights. Thanks for your information.

Allison Does not Lockup

I have a 2004.5 Duramax/Allison. Recently, the transmission does not lockup until I have driven about 5 miles. I have about 91000 miles on my truck. I last had the transmission fluid and filter changed at 50000. I checked the fluid level and it is correct.
After I drive about 5 miles, then it seems to work normal. But there must be something wrong for it to act this way. Anybody have this happen to them? What was the solution?

Hard to believe that the right front is carrying 400 pounds more that any of the other wheels. Is is possible that something was done wrong during the weighing process?
With leaf spring suspension, the weight on each side should be more or less the same between front and back. Side to side could be different due to slide arrangement, appliances, etc.
If you have torsion axles, weight from front to back will be a little different if the trailer is not level front to back. My trailer rides a couple inches high in the front. Therefore, my rear axle carries a couple hundred pounds more than the front axle.

Our 2005 Open Road has "all wood" cabinets. That was just one of the reasons we decided in favor of our Open Road. Most had solid doors like yours. There were very few in our price range that had solid wood cabinet frames.
We looked at Cameo, Montana, Everest to name a few. All had pressed wood frames. If you feel inside the frame, you can feel the "wrapping" if the frames are made of pressed wood. It was amazing how many units used pressed wood.

Any chance that the battery water is low? If the batter water is low, it can produce a "rotten egg" smell when charging.

I think dbbls probably has the answer. If the hydraulic fluid is low, there may not be enough fluid to extend all slides. However, it seems like you would hear a change in the pump when it reaches the point of not having enough fluid.
